In 2018 Ryan Stopera produced the photo book ACCENTS, alongside over 20 Asian American community members from across the Twin Cities, working collaboratively with subjects in shooting their portraits and sharing their stories about their Asian American identity.
Inspired by the conversations centered in Asian American identity that he had with subjects in ACCENTS, the nostalgia they evoked, and the futurism we are living in today, Stopera produced Paper Son, diving deeper into the topic by examining Asian American gender, masculinity, and media representation through studio film photography and written interviews. In addition to the photos, the interviews in Paper Son ask as many questions as they answer, and create essential conversations about Asian American identity today.
